Delegation of DONRE Luang Namtha Lao PDR invited to visit Yunnan

A 8-member delegation of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment (DONRE), Luang Namtha Province, Lao PDR headed by Mr. Chanthy  KEOSOUPHORN, Deputy Director, paid a five-day visit to Yunnan Province at the invitation of Mr. Guohua YAO, Director General of YEDP from 7th to 11th September.

Director General, Mr. Guohua YAO met with the delegation in the morning of 10th September. Firstly, he welcomed the delegation to visit Yunnan, and then introduced the “One-road, One Belt” strategy and the environment protection work in Yunnan. “To strengthen the environmental exchange and cooperation with Luang Namtha was the actual action in response to the strategy, gave full play to the role of Yunnan as radiation center for South and Southeast Asia. Both Yunnan and Luang Namtha have a sound ecological environment, it is an important task for us to protect the environment for people to enjoy and for a sustainable development of the region. We wish to strengthen the exchange and cooperation in the rural environment management, staff training and research field ” He said.

Deputy Director, Mr. Chanthy KEOSOUPHORN introduced the environmental protection situation in Laos and Luang Namtha respectively. He said he had witnessed the achievements and efficiency of environmental protection work in Yunnan during visiting, and believed that bilateral cooperation will certainly be able to achieve good results.

After the meeting, Director Guohua YAO and Deputy Director Chanthy KEOSOUPHORN signed the “Environmental Cooperation Memorandum”. In the Memorandum, two parties give priority to cooperation in the rural environmental management, cross-sector water pollution control, biodiversity conservation in joint protected areas, environmental planning and research, environment education, environmental management training and capacity building etc. fields. The cooperation will be conducted in the way of information and documents exchange, personal exchange and visiting, joint forum, professional training, joint research and demonstration pilots. The two parties will establish their own permanent mechanism responsible for the implementation of the MoU and hold an annual joint coordination meeting. The signing of the MoU aims to encourage and support environmental protection enterprises, research institutions in Yunnan and Laos’s Namtha, to establish and develop direct cooperation relations and jointly promote the exchanges and cooperation of the environment protection industry and related technologies.

During the visit in Yunnan, the delegation conducted field visits to Yunnan Environment Monitoring Station, Yunnan Institute of Environment Science, Kunming waste water treatment plant and a rural environmentsl management pilot around Kunming. The delegation also had in-depth exchange and discussions with YEDP related officers and persons in charge of units directly under YEDP on the environmental issues of common concern and future cooperation.
